When the early press about Porsche’s new supercar, the 918 Spyder, started bubbling out, Porsche had some lofty goals. Among them was the goal of beating the Carrera GT’s Nordschleife??record of 7 minutes 32 seconds and lapping The Green Hell in 7:22.

Today, they utterly smashed that goal, set a new record around the most fearsome track in the world and lapped the Nordschleife??in under seven minutes. They did it in 6 minutes and 57 seconds - a second faster than Niki Lauda when he became the first person to break the seven minute barrier during qualifying for the 1975 German Grand Prix.
